Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)
What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK government
scheme that compensates small-scale renewable energy
producers, such as those using solar panels or wind
turbines, for exporting excess electricity to the national
grid.
The SEG, which replaced the Feed-In Tariff (FiT), aims to
promote the adoption of renewable energy and support
the integration of clean electricity into the grid.
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I eligible for a smart export guarantee tariff?
You might be eligible if you generate renewable electricity from Solar Panels, Wind Turbines,
Hydroelectricity, Anaerobic Digestion. or Micro combined heat and power. You must also have a registered
smart meter that records the exported electricity, even if you are not signing up to a typical import
contract with a UK supplier. You may be asked to provide an MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme)
certificate to prove that industry standards are met.
What are the different types of Smart Export Guarantee Tariffs?
Suppliers offer both fixed and variable SEG tariffs. Energy suppliers can choose what rates to offer, and
they might have more than one type of tariff. There are two kinds of SEG tariffs:
• Fixed tariffs pay a set rate for each kWh of exported electricity throughout the contract.
• Variable tariffs change depending on market demand but always stay above zero.
What's the difference between the Smart Export Guarantee and Feed-In Tariffs?
The Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme, paid owners of renewable energy systems for the electricity they
generated and allowed them to sell surplus energy. While FiT closed to new applicants in March 2019,
existing participants continue to receive payments until their contracts end. In contrast, the Smart Export
Guarantee only compensates for surplus energy exported to the grid, with rates set by energy suppliers.
How to Apply for a Smart Export Guarantee Tariff?
In order to secure an SEG contract please contact your chosen supplier directly. Ofgem releases a list of
SEG licensees annually, we have provided a list of our recommended suppliers who offer this service on the
next page. Your SEG provider does not necessarily have to be the same company that supplies your energy.
It is important to compare multiple SEG providers to ensure you get the most beneficial deal for your
situation. Applicants must have an ‘export meter’ installed to participate in the SEG tariff. Additionally,
‘export meter readings’ are essential for calculating SEG payments, as they accurately track the amount of
electricity exported back to the grid. You may also need to provide an MSC Certificate.
